Expanded Parking Opportunities
COST OF PROJECT: $758,000 (to date)
COMPLETION DATE: Ongoing
The Charlevoix DDA is committed to offering an effective, available parking system that services the needs for both a quick stop and all day shoppers alike. In 1987 the DDA commenced acquiring underutilized downtown parcels and converting them into public parking opportunites. Over the past 20 years, the DDA has spent over $750K on lot acquisition and improvement and currently offers shoppers over 300 available off-street parking spaces within it's boundaries. Another 245 spaces are available on Bridge Street and Downtown's side streets.
In 2010, the DDA spearheaded a massive improvement of the DeWitt Parking Lot accessed from Park Avenue, increasing available spaces from 27 to 41. This project also included enhanced entrances and rain gardens and plantings designed to better mitigate stormwater runoff, ensuring proper filtration of water flowing to the nearby Pine River Channel, which connects Lake Michigan with Round Lake and Lake Charlevoix.
As part of the major Clinton Street infrastructure improvement project in 2012, the former gravel White Parking Lot was reconstructed with pavement, curb and gutter, and progressive stormwater management practices. The White Parking Lot also boasts one of the few electric vehicle (EV) charging pedestals in northern Michigan. EV drivers can utilize a credit or debit card to fully charge their vehicle in just three hours.
With the exception of Bridge Street parking, a handful of annual paid parking spaces and the parking stalls associated with the aforementioned EV charging pedestal, all of Downtown Charlevoix's public parking is absolutely free.
The DDA's parking inventory includes metered, non-metered and short-term parking options. For a map of Downtown Parking opportunities, please click HERE.
